Crossness Sewage Treatment Works
Crossness is one of London's major sewage treatment works and one of the largest in Europe.
The earliest part of the works was built in 1865 as part of Sir Joseph Bazalgette's plan to manage London's sewage.
Situated on the south bank of the River Thames, the works serve a large population of South London.
Sewage from nearly two million Londoners is treated daily at the site.
The works' sludge powered generator is an architecturally stunning building.
The generator has been running since 1998 and can produce up to 6 Megawatts of energy.
This source of green energy provides about three-quarters of the site's electricity needs.
