Our business

We are the UK's largest water and wastewater services company. Every day, we supply 2,600 million litres of tap water to 8.5 million customers across London and the Thames Valley. We also remove and treat 2,800 million litres of sewage for an area covering 13.5 million customers.

We carry out over 500,000 tests per year to ensure our drinking water - currently at its best-every quality - meets stringent UK and European standards.

We operate the Thames Water Ring Main, a 50-mile-long feat of engineering which supplies much of London, and which we are currently extending.

Our 349 sewage treatment works include Beckton, in East London, which is the largest in Europe. Several of these works create renewable energy, making us the biggest generator of 'green power' within the M25.

Other major Thames Water sites include our Customer Centre in Swindon, which annually handles four million enquiries and manages 3.5 million accounts. Our company headquarters is Clearwater Court in Reading.

Major projects include work to create the UK's first large-scale desalination plant, which will remove salt from water taken from the tidal Thames to help ensure supplies for Londoners during future droughts.

We are also replacing the capital's oldest water mains, many of them more than 100 years old, to reduce leakage and safeguard supplies for the future. By 2010, we will have renewed over 1,000 miles of pipes.

On the wastewater side of our business, we are starting a huge project to create a 'Tideway Tunnel' beneath the Thames in London, which during heavy rain will collect dilute sewage that would otherwise pollute the river.
