Managing sludge: our 25-year strategy

We have always sought to adopt sustainable and cost effective solutions for managing sewage sludge - the solid matter produced from the treatment of wastewater.

We have been developing our proposals for the management of sewage sludge in our region over the next 25-years and, after consultation with our stakeholders, have finalised our Sludge Strategy.

The Sludge Strategy is based upon an assessment of a range of treatments / outlet options, which have helped us identify a preferred list for each sludge area in our region.

Sludge Strategy and Strategic Environmental Assessment

Independent consultants (Entec) completed a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of our draft Sludge Strategy to ensure that environmental, social and economic sustainability aims were central to our decision-making.

During Summer 2008, we consulted stakeholders on the draft Sludge Strategy and the SEA Environmental Report.

The final Sludge Strategy and SEA Post Adoption Statement are now available to download at the bottom of this page.

The SEA Scoping Report is not available to download due to its large file size, but is available on request.

Responding to feedback received from the consultation

A schedule of text amendments is included in Table 1 of the final Sludge Strategy Executive Summary. It summarises the changes made in response to the comments we received during the consultation and recent changes to legislation.

The purpose of the SEA Post Adoption Statement is to explain how the findings of the SEA Environmental Report have been taken into account. It includes our response to comments submitted to the consultation on the SEA and covers our approach to monitoring. A schedule of the consultee responses, and our replies, is given in Appendix A.
