Birdwatching highlights 2007

Birdwatching at our sites can be very rewarding and, statistically, birdwatchers that visit regularly have the greatest chance of observing the most variety of bird species, migration events or finding rare birds.

Its unsurprising that the most visited sites produced the best birds and highlights of the year.

There were two significant birdwatching events:

  • The Queen Elizabeth II Reservoir was drained for several months to perform an engineering inspection; this offered prime feeding habitat for waders in the exposed silt on the reservoir bed.
  • An outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease during the summer lead to the closure of several reservoirs for short a period in the South West London area.

Please note: this information is based on the best available reports gathered throughout the year and compiled by Thames Water's Biodiversity Manager.
