Reading your meter
We have a regulatory requirement to read your meter at least once every two years, but aim to read it every six months. In some cases we may need to contact you to gain access.
I have received a meter reading card - what should I do?
If we can't access your meter and you're not home when we call, we will leave you a calling card requesting a reading. If you are unable to provide this, we will estimate your bill.
How are estimated bills calculated?
If you have received an estimated bill but would prefer an accurate reading, you can submit your reading to us online.
Please note, you will need to allow 15 days from the date of the estimated bill before submitting your reading online. When submitting your reading online, you will need your ten-digit account number.
You can also submit your reading by calling our Customer Centre on 0845 9200 888 (Minicom 0845 7200 899).
Where is my meter?
Your meter may be fitted inside or outside your home.
- Indoor meters are usually fitted under the kitchen sink by the inside stop valve.
- Outdoor meters are usually fitted at the outside stop valve. Look for a small metal or plastic cover in your drive, garden or nearby footpath.
How can I access my meter?
Outdoor meters are generally found in a small box under a metal or plastic cover. You will need a screwdriver to open this.
Under the cover you will find a foam or polystyrene disc. This protects your meter from frost so be please ensure you replace it.
If your meter is under a large cast iron cover, please do not attempt to lift it.
How do I read my meter?
Meters record water in cubic metres.
One cubic metre is equivalent to 1000 litres or 220 gallons.
The black digits on the meter represent the number of cubic metres used. The red digits record tenths and hundredths of a cubic metre.
We charge for every cubic metre so please just note the black numbers.
