The selection of construction methods is an important aspect of any mains replacement scheme.

There are several stages of planning which takes place prior to confirming the method:
- A full street-by-street survey is undertaken.
- Trial holes and pipe samples are installed to determine ground conditions and location of other utility services.
- Close liaison with other Thames Water departments and highways agencies.
